Safe to run Linux inside vm in Win 10?

Hi

I have a little project I am working on. Nothing earth shattering, just something for my own amusement more than anything else.

In Windows 7 I have created a folder called "APPs" within my UserProfile. In this APPs folder I place all my software shortcuts. Just a place to keep things tidy and not have my Desktop cluttered up with lots of links.

I have just the other day figured out how to change these links to the .exe files with .vbs files which will when clicked on will close the APPs folder Window and run my chosen application. Then if I make shortcuts of these .vbs files I can change the icon to resemble the application in question, i.e Notepad.So when the APPS folder is opened all I see are icons.

This I really like, don't judge me, I am easily pleased. :o

Which does mean I have to find a place for my .vbs files to live. At the mo the are placed within a hidden folder within the APPs folder. This works well but is bugging me. I feel I can make this tidier.
For example the icons for the .vbs shortcuts live inside a .dll file i have created and lives in C:\Windows. One file holding a lot of icons and easily pointed to and called from.

What i was thinking is can my .vbs files also live inside a .dll file and be esily pointed to and called from ? This may sound totally ridiculous to you clever lot but i have honestly no idea if this is at all possible.
My web searching as turned up nothing for me so me thinks this is not the way to go about things.

Just wondering is there a better way to keep and hide my .vbs files or storing thme inside a hidden folder a good one.

Any ideas or feedback would be cool.

Reset Microsoft Edge in Windows 10

The following guide walks you through the steps of resetting the Microsoft Edge web browser in Windows 10.
It describes a soft reset which will only delete data added to the browser during use, and a hard reset which removes Microsoft Edge from the computer system and adds it again in its pristine form afterwards.
Microsoft Edge, like any other browser installed on your system, can fail or throw errors. Maybe it is not starting at all anymore, displaying error messages when you are using it, or behaving erratically in other ways.
One good troubleshooting starting point is to analyze the issue to determine whether it is browser-related or happening on sites you are visiting.
A soft reset may help in the latter case, while a hard reset may be the best solution if you believe the issue to be program related.
One example: if videos don't play anymore on a website you have used in the past, it is likely site related, but if Edge throws an error message when you start it, it is likely browser related.
Microsoft Edge Soft Reset

It is highly suggested to try a soft reset of Microsoft Edge first before you go all nuclear and hard reset it.
With Edge open, click or tap on the three-dots in the top right corner to open the context menu, and select Settings from it.

I suggest you click or tap on the pin icon in the upper right corner to keep the Settings window open during the operation.
Scroll down until you find the "clear browsing data" button and click on the "choose what to clear" button underneath it.

This opens options to clear browsing data, and you find the usual data such as the browsing history or cookies listed there at first.
Click on the "show more" link underneath that first selection to display additional options on the screen.

This opens five additional data sets that you can delete.

  1. Media licenses
  2. Pop-up exceptions
  3. Location permissions
  4. Full screen permissions
  5. Compatibility permissions.

As you can see from the listing, those are all related to sites or media that you have accessed in the browser.
Clearing those won't help you if the issue is program related rather than site or media related, but if you run into issues accessing specific sites, it may be worth a shot.
I suggest you clear the browsing history, cache and cookies at well using the form.
Once you have made your selection, hit the clear button to start the removal process.

Reset Microsoft Edge - The hard way

The second option that you have is a nuclear one, as it will remove the Edge package from the operating system to replace it with the default version that ships with Windows 10. It will reset Microsoft Edge this way, even though a more precise description would be replace as it removes the installed package to replace it with the default copy.
One of the easier ways to perform the operation is the Reset Microsoft Edge PowerShell script provided by Ten Forums.

Download the archive and unpack it on your system. Once done, right-click on the file and select "Run with PowerShell" from the context menu.
It performs two operations when executed:
remove-item $env:localappdata\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\* -recurse -Force 2>$null
This removes the Microsoft Edge installation package from the operating system. The parameters used at the end do the following:

  • -Recurse has the script include all child items under the selected path.
  • -Force allows the script to remove items such as hidden or read-only files that cannot be changed normally
  • 2>$null redirects the error stream to null.

The second command adds Microsoft Edge to the system again.
Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml" -Verbose}
Basically, it will install a default copy of Microsoft Edge on the device.
Using the Event Viewer to find the root cause


Before you hard reset Microsoft Edge on your Windows 10 device, you may want to find out more about the issue you are experiencing.
One option that you have in this regard is to use the Event Viewer for that. Tap on the Windows-key, type Event Viewer and hit enter to load the program.
Select Application on the left side, and right-click on the entry afterwards. Pick "Find" from the context menu, and enter "edge" in the "find what" field". Hit "Find next afterwards to go through all reported events that mention Microsoft Edge.
The next step depends largely on the events. Try to match events to the issue you are experiencing and try to find patterns, e.g. the same event error whenever you run into the issue while using Microsoft Edge.

Office 2016 - Word show author on info panel

Guys and girls hi! I am using office 2016 kms activated, now i create a large number of documents for college and i want to be recognized for my work. When i am in word -> file -> info i can see author but i cannot see my profile picture or email address (my offcie is linked with ms account). The windows 10 i have have a legit licence but currently i don't have legit office (in my country is tad expensive). Do i have to have legit office to show my picture and email in document author in info panel or not?

ASUS Bluetooth 4.0 Windows 10

Hey all,

Few days ago I bought a Bluetooth adaptor and headphones. I didn't install the drivers due to the fact windows 10 has its Owen update drivers. The problem I am having is when I turn off the Bluetooth headphones. and when I turn them on again it seems I have to pair them all the time by Restarting windows. And Microsoft support is ran by Monkeys working for bananas.
I have also ran troubleshooter on the hardware-sound. still didn't fix the problem any ideas ?:eek:

Can't Remove Packages from Images

No matter what I try for some reason I can't remove any package from my Windows 10 images.

DISM gives me Error 5. Access is denied. install_wim_tweak appears like it works, but it's really just going through the motions because no packages are actually removed.

I don't know why this is happening. I use an administrator account and UAC is disabled.

sync favorites between chrome and edge: possible?

Hello to all. I speak not to export it to synchronize. that is, it suits me to have synchronized across multiple devices favorite and chrome is fine . But I wanted to help but chrome and since I knew that edge is getting better , I asked who knows, if you can make a kind of access with data from google and maintain bookmarks always synchronized.

Decoder error trying to play live TV

I just installed Windows Media Center from the links on this site. However, I get the following error message when I try to play live TV.

Decoder Error

The video decoder is not working, is not installed, or is not supported. Try installing the codec or restarting your computer. For more inforation about codecs, see Windows Help.


Any help would be appreciated. :)

How come Server 2012 and R2 still allow OEM SLIC activation where as 8 and above dont

How come the desktop versions of Windows 8, 8.1 and then 10 do not allow SLIC OEM offline activation anymore, but they still allow it for server versions of Windows.

I that case if someone wanted to move to Windows 8.1, but does not want to use KMS or buy a legit license or otherwise have to contact MS Server someway for activation, could you install Windows Server 2012 R2 and effectively tweak it to be like Windows 8.1 Pro? Or is that had and almost impossible without changing the license which would render the OEM SLIC inoperable and thus a loader would not work if you use workstation apps like games instead of server apps?

Maybe it could also work for Server 2016 once it goes final if MS still allows OEM SLIC activation and a loader could work and maybe convert it to Windows 10 for fully permanent offline activation without it ever contacting MS Server online?

14267 build broke flash webcam support. Any workaround?

Hey guys,
I've been on the latest stable build for a while but decided to try insider build 14267 to see if it fixes an issue I was having (start menu search showing uninstalled programs, no new programs, stuck with search is incomplete). Well it fixed the issue, but now I'm having a bigger issue. Before I rollback I wanted to see if anyone has experienced this or knows a way to workaround

I'm in school and take exams remotely through a Chromium based program that uses Flash to record webcam. With insider build the webcam (lifecam cinema) is giving out blank output, although it is detected. Websites that test webcams in flash have the same issue on Chrome and Firefox, it's just black. I'm on latest flash stable

In Edge browser it works fine. Looks like Edge is using a version of flash that's different (21.0.0.110). I downloaded flash beta ver. 21.0.0.157 which did not fix the issue.

I tried reinstalling the webcam driver with no luck. The new Win10 build didn't update the driver, so not sure what's going on. The camera works in other non-flash based apps.
